The further up the mountain they logged, the more difficult the process became. Waterways or high line yarding were the preferred methods of transport, but sometimes railroads were built far up on the slopes and even over to the other side. If a logger was injured so far away from camp, it was bad news indeed.
Why mess around when you can go straight up? This incline was the steepest in the region, and trains couldn't go up it without assistance from a steam donkey pulling at the top. The donkey then had to lower the locomotive down the other side of the grade. If something went wrong the train would be ripping down the incline, completely out of control—and God help anything unfortunate enough to be in its path.
